A rooftop solar system is a big purchase with a government subsidy attached. GenuineRate checks the price per kW, the panels and inverter, and what the quote includes — and shows what you'll pay after the PM Surya Ghar subsidy.
Every line is compared with brand price lists and researched rates for your city. You get what's overpriced, what's missing, questions to ask, and a polite message to send.
Common overcharges
Price per kW above the market
Compare the total before subsidy with the typical price per kW for your system size — small systems cost a little more per kW.
Non-DCR panels on a subsidy quote
The central subsidy needs DCR panels (made with Indian cells) installed by a registered vendor. Check the panel make, model and DCR certificate.
Inverter, structure and cables not specified
The inverter brand and size, the structure's material and height, and the cable specifications should all be on the quote.
Subsidy shown as a discount
Under PM Surya Ghar the subsidy is paid into your bank account after the system is installed and inspected. Check the price you pay up front.
Net metering charges unclear
Ask who pays for the net meter and the electricity board application, and what's included.
A residential on-grid system typically costs ₹45,000–₹65,000 per kW before subsidy. DCR panels cost about ₹22–₹28 per watt.
How much is the PM Surya Ghar subsidy?
The central subsidy is ₹30,000 per kW for the first 2 kW and ₹18,000 for the third — up to ₹78,000 for systems of 3 kW and above. Some states add more. Check pmsuryaghar.gov.in for the current rules.
What size system do I need?
As a rough guide, 1 kW of rooftop solar makes about 4 units a day in most of India, so a home using 300 units a month needs about 2.5–3 kW.
